Since the eleventh century Anjou Castle has stood on the banks of the river Layon, a tributary of the Loire River - a cultural and horticultural rich region of the North West fondly known as the ‘Garden of France’.

A significant night in the Castle's history was in 1576 when the owner, Jacques du Bellay had the honour of hosting the King of Navarre, later to become Henri IV or "le bon roi Henri", under the roof of the castle.

Having been meticulously restored in the mid 1980’s it offers modern comforts while still retaining its original grandeur. The Castle's impressive character is preserved in its thick stone walls, high ceilings and seventeenth and eighteenth century antique furniture throughout.

It is through castles such as this that the history and culture of the region live on and Anjou Castle offer a unique opportunity to experience a slice of French life.

The self-catering Castle has five bedrooms which can accommodate up to fifteen guests. While the entire property can accommodate groups of up to 40 guests when hiring the neighbouring Gîtes (adjoining self-contained cottages) and Chambres d'hôtes (adjoining cottages without a kitchen).

Feast and dance in the 100m2 Banquet Hall which boasts a five-metre-long solid oak dining table seating up to 18 guests, candelabras, antique furniture and a large fireplace from the 17th Century.

Appreciate the incredible acoustics of the Hall and play your favourite music through a quality amp and generous speakers or tinkle the ivories on the Young Chan grand piano while the light filters through the handmade leadlight windows.

A separate lounge offers a flat screen, DVD player and DVDs with a large comfortable leather couch. The Castle wraps around a spacious courtyard which opens onto the park and Layon River. Between May and July the garden is bursting with a veritable selection of roses, shrubs and flowers across 5000m2 (1/2 hectare) of well-established gardens. Large trees in the park afford an abundance of shade in the summer. Outdoor furniture. Fire bowl with an initial stack of complimentary firewood. Boules and Badminton sets available.

Steps lead down to the river which affords a tranquil view and opportunity to observe the wildlife in their natural environment
