Lismore Castle, County Waterford, Ireland Vacation Rental
Originally built in 1185 by King John and owned by the Cavendish family - Dukes of Devonshire - since 1753, Lismore Castle has always been a special place for family gatherings and impressive and elegant rooms reveal a history that includes several other renowned families
Lismore Castle is very closely connected to the Astaire family as Adele Astaire retired from the stage in 1932 to marry Lord Charles Cavendish, second son of the 9th Duke of Devonshire and owner of Lismore Castle. Lord Charles died in 1944 and, in 1947 when she remarried, the castle passed back to Devonshire ownership. Adele however continued to visit and each summer would take the castle and host some wonderful gatherings, many of which were attended by her brother Fred Astaire.
The connection between the Kennedy family and Lismore Castle is also very strong as Kathleen Kennedy married Lord William Cavendish, heir to the Dukedom of Devonshire, in 1944. He was tragically killed in Belgium a mere four months later. From then until her own tragic death in 1948, she spent time in Lismore with family and friends and in August 1947, had one of her famous house parties here. On this occasion, one of the guests was her brother John F. Kennedy and it was during this visit that, armed with directions from one of his aunts, he made the journey to Duncanstown County Wexford to locate his ancestral home.
The 50th anniversary of his official state visit to Ireland as President of the United States of America will be celebrated in 2013, and with family and friends we here in Lismore look forward to celebrating our small role in that historic visit throughout 2013.
Generations of the Cavendish family have themselves celebrated many important and special family occasions here at Lismore Castle - from shooting and fishing parties parties to wedding banquets and birthday celebrations, as well as visits from Prince Charles and many others.
New families continue to make the history of Lismore Castle a special and important one and many of our families return again and again to celebrate milestone events or to simply enjoy time together in a spectacular and historic location.
