A fine Georgian house built on the site of a sixteenth century castle. The house was built in the second half of the seventeenth century, within the enclosure of the old castle which had by now fallen into ruins. In the tower rooms musket chambers still overlook the entrance steps. This elegant family home combines 18th century features, fine plasterwork ceilings and marble period fireplaces with modern day comfort. The house is a short distance from Roscommon Town, while surrounded by garden and countryside.
In the 18th century the property passed into the ownership of the Gunnings, rumoured to have won it in a poker game. The Gunning sisters, who were later to become the Duchesses of Hamilton, Argyll and Coventry, were renowned for their beauty. Their portraits, painted by Joshua Reynolds, can be viewed in the main hall. The house passed through other hands prior to being purchased by the present owner in 1997.
Castlecoote was a cavernous ruin at the time and the restoration work has taken many years to complete. The result is an elegant family home surrounded by woodland, a fast flowing river and lovely gardens. You can walk in the well maintained grounds, play tennis or croquet, fish on the River Suck or enjoy a game of snooker - all without leaving your "home away from home".
The restored ballroom seats up to 70 people and is ideal for small intimate weddings and other special occasions.
A Little History
The Castle is situated on the site of a medieval castle, thought to have been built between 1570 and 1616. It was a strategic site, and may have been the base of the Chieftains of Fuerty, the MacGeraghty clan. In 1616 it fell into the hands of Sir Charles Coote, who improved and refortified the castle. The castle was attacked three times by the confederate forces in the 1640's.
