Kinross House Estate, Kinross, Scotland Vacation Rental
Kinross House Estate is one of the noblest classical country houses in Scotland. Located between Loch Leven Castle and the town of Kinross, the estate possesses one of the most historic views in Scotland, directly across from the 11th-century castle where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned and finally abdicated. The estate offers a total of 24 double bedrooms, accommodating up to 48 guests. The Main House has 14 feature ensuite bedrooms and the Coach House provides a further 10 individually designed ensuite bedrooms. Each room is named after an aspect of the history, character or location of the estate. All the bedrooms are luxuriously comfortable, featuring distinctive furnishings and period furniture, yet often with contemporary touches including fabulous uniquely designed bathrooms.
Kinross House is the first, and most important, neoclassical Palladian mansion built in Scotland. Described in Country Life Magazine as ‘the complete expression in stone of the Renaissance in Scotland’ the property was Sir William Bruce’s greatest masterpiece. The elegant Entrance Hall is an open, light-filled yet delicately proportioned space, with graceful fluted columns, astragal half-glazed doors, and exquisite cornices. Kinross House contains an important collection of paintings, focused on Scottish portraiture by important Scottish artists of well-known, largely Scottish, sitters. The Grand Salon doubles as a beautiful picture gallery with impressive full size portraits of King George III and his Queen, Charlotte, by Allan Ramsey at either end of the room. Along the walls hang portraits of the Earl of Hamilton by Daniel Mytens and of James Stewart, Duke of Richmond by Sir Anthony van Dyck. Works by Kettle, Mosnier and Wissing further adorn the walls. Sir William Bruce himself stares down from the State Staircase, painted in 1664 by Scougal, as do Sir James Montgomery by Sir Henry Raeburn and Lady Margaret Montgomery by Hoppner.
Kinross House Estate sits on the west shores of Loch Leven. The Estate itself offers woodland walkways, spectacular landscaped gardens, and manicured lawns, plus our very own Loch Leven Castle Island. Loch Leven is Scotland’s largest lowland freshwater loch with excellent trout fishing and is a designated National Nature Reserve. Kinross House Estate stretches over 4000 acres of woodland, beautifully landscaped gardens and extends to Loch Leven on which stands the private Loch Leven Castle Island, famous for being the island where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in the 1560’s. There is an abundance of options to host sporting activities either on the Estate or further afield, or to enjoy sightseeing around many famous Scottish landmarks
