Sight seeing

Burgundy enjoys a rich and varied heritage which you are warmly invited to explore. From Gallic remains to Romanesque towers, from the art treasures of its cities to the splendours of its châteaux – all of this is there for you to see and enjoy.

• The Hospices de Beaune, is well known by wine lovers not only for its famous auction every year in November, but also for its XVI century old hospital.

• Dijon, the capital of Burgundy. There are no fewer than 97 hectares of listed and beautifully preserved monuments in Dijon. The superb legacy of the Burgundian Dukes – from the Ducal Palace to the Charterhouse of Champmol – is a must-see in the region.

• Dole used to be the capital city of Burgundy, Franche Comté has since taken over. The heritage of Dole mainly dates back to the Renaissance. It features a number of outstanding buildings: the 16th-century collegiate church, a hospital building and several beautifully kept townhouses.

• The Royal Saltworks of Arc et Senans is an important example of an early Enlightenment project in which the architect based his design on a philosophy that favored arranging buildings according to a rational geometry and a hierarchical relation between the parts of the project. The site is a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Shopping and Markets

Burgundy is known for its wonderful markets. The nearby food markets are famous for the variety and freshness of the products direct from farms: specialist producers of chicken (from Bresse), local honey and cheese, fruits of the season, andouillettes, boudin, truffles and mushrooms. Market day is always lively and fun.

Starting early in the morning, by midday the wares are being packed away. Most villages have a street market. We will be happy to provide you with a list of the best markets in the area.

Beaune and Dijon are also well known for their antique boutiques. Feel free to let your eyes wander and experience the old parts of these cities through their antique shops.
