Sian Ka'an is the largest protected nature preserve in Mexico's Maya Riviera, world renowned for its unique wetlands and unparalleled biodiversity. The name Sian Ka'an means "where the sky is born" in Maya. The Mesoamerican Reef—the world's second largest—is just a short swim from the beachfront directly outside your doorstep.

The interiors are best described as Mexican contemporary, combining simple minimalism with Mexican handicrafts, achieving a cozy environment in harmony with the jungle surroundings.

The bedrooms are air-conditioned and feature high quality, eco-friendly linens. The bathrooms feature marble floors and granite countertops, and eco-friendly towels, bathrobes, luxury soaps, and shampoo.

The great room under the palapa is the heart of the lodge, a place to share the adventures of the day and enjoy memorable meals prepared by our chef. The kitchen features granite countertops as well as green technology appliances.

The "mirador" is the vantage point of the lodge, overlooking the endless jungle and lagoon landscape to the West and the majestic turquoise sea to the East, giving you a 360 degree view.

The spectacular white-sand beach is situated in a very large cove brimming with the beautiful colors of the light reflecting by the Caribbean sea. Throughout Mexico, all beaches are public. But here you will almost never see any other people. Your company is the sound of the waves and the large birds gliding by. Take a swim, kayak, or simply relax in the warm waters. A large reef is just 400 meters away, waiting for you to explore. It is truly a tropical paradise.

About The Area

Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve covers approximately 1.3 million acres of central Quintana Roo. It was established as part of UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Program in 1986, and in 1987 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In Maya, Sian Ka'an means "where the sky is born" or "gift from the sky." It was inhabited in the Maya Classic and Post Classic Periods, and has 23 known archeological sites. The northern part was a trade route between two important city states, Tulum and Muyil. With an infrastructure of man-made channels connecting existing lagoons.

Currently about 2,000 people live in the area, especially in the coastal regions, where Punta Allen and Punta Herrero are the largest fishing communities. It is the home to more than 100 species of mammals, 336 species of birds, and the the nesting ground for many wading birds, and two species of endangered turtles.

Human activity in the Reserve is highly restricted. In more than half of its total area only scientific research is permitted. There are some parts where sustainable development projects are allowed; and only around 1% of the total area is privately owned.

Sian Ka'an's conservation challenge is to promote low-impact human activities in order to protect all forms of life within its boundaries. For this purpose, the Mexican Government works together with private NGOs, like Amigos de Sian Ka'an.
