Calistoga Hideout Incredibly Unique and Luxury Estate on 10 secluded acres on the central ridge straddling both the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, the estate is under 15 minutes from the center of either valley. This historically appointed property is built for time travel. The origin and vocabulary of every item in the house stays true to the life and times of the late 1800’s - when the “west was being won”. The great room is massive, walls of reclaimed redwood, soar to 26 feet. A 75-foot long deck cantilevers over the infamous Humbug Creek with redwoods growing right through it. A full regulation billiard and poker hall with bar, wide-screen TV and surround sound just steps off the Grand Room. This structure is, in fact, all new construction with every possible environmental efficiency and technological luxury imaginable.

Furthermore, unlike any other regional vacation rental, we have a full-time caretaker who lives nearby and numerous staff monitor a guest assistance line 16 hours plus every day This service will continue during a longer-term residency.
Nestled among giant redwoods born centuries ago, on a sunny, south-facing knoll above a gurgling, mountain brook sits an incomparable lodging experience. On 10 acres just below the ridge straddling both the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, where you can do so much more than soak and sip and savor This estate is truly a many splendored thing overflowing with a multitude of historical interludes - and we hope life-changing moments.
Each of the historically appointed yet luscious 7 bedrooms has its own private bath. The level of comfort is like none other; geography and aesthetics are show-stopping. The towering trees create a virtual cathedral encircling the house reaching over 200 feet to the heavens; humbling one with their length of limb as equally with their length of life. The great room, walls of reclaimed redwood itself, soars to 26 feet above the floor. A full regulation billiard and poker hall with wide-screen TV and surround sound are just steps off the Great Room. Our 7th bedroom is the conversion of the elevated poker area with a private bath. The public spaces are just vast and afford numerous opportunities for additional daybeds in a variety of nooks scattered about the building.
It seems to be some tall structure of the late 1800's yet with all the luxuries of modern-day. This structure is all new construction with every possible environmental efficiency and technological luxury imaginable. Above all, please be informed that this historic property is built for time travel. Everything is reclaimed, repurposed and antique - if only the furnishings could talk what stories they could tell!! We have walnut cabinets from early Philadelphia in the billiards room, hand-made European doors of the late 1800’s throughout, live edge redwood from the western shores of Sonoma County, fir plank flooring reclaimed from the abandoned Mare Island Naval Base at the North End of the San Francisco Bay. The artwork, sculpture and objects displayed throughout the house come from all over rural America. All furnishings, decor, and appointments are true antiques and mementos of life in the late 19th century.
The unique siting at the edge of a glen of tall trees gives the guests a magical combination of lots of sun, the splendor of the redwoods and the delight of the creek below. A 75-foot long deck cantilevers over the infamous Humbug Creek with 3 of the towering redwoods growing right through it. A large fire-pit in the back yard is the perfect place to gather and share tall tales and intimate moments. The hot tub is state of the art with a variety of custom jet-packs providing true hydrotherapy massage in 7 different locations in the tub. There is a library of books filled with period material as well as current analysis of the days of yore. An ever-growing video library offers a noteworthy collection of the best old westerns and documentaries to instruct about the western progression of American settlers, outlaws, and adventurers. Necessarily included is the good the bad and the ugly of the history of the American Wild West and the Victorian society of the late 1800’s.
True to the period, the buildings are filled with taxidermy, salvaged and repurposed to be sure. Most are truly antique and of course, no endangered species. The owner is an interior designer and was not herself sure about the taxidermy to start out with but wanted to build an environment where guests could get truly close to the awe-inspiring geography, flora and fauna of this wondrous region - as well as its notorious history. The vocabulary of every item in the house stays true to the life and times of the late 1800’s - when the “west was being won”. Certainly, the ugly side of life in the pioneer days did unquantifiable damage to the land, the natives and the animals. We hope that this project instructs but completely understand those who find the taxidermy disruptive to their sensibilities. For us, the wonder of the animal world is a very powerful presence in the house - standing guard and asking one to heed the call of nature, to protect and defend them and their habitat.
The redwoods flourish just along the creek then the landscape quickly returns to the sun-drenched hills so typical of this region. In summer the redwood grove provides a refreshing escape from the surrounding summer heat; in winter the house is simply beyond one’s imaginings as the creek fills with rain and rushes around 2 sides of the main building where it is situated above a curve in the creek bed. The rushing water is spectacular to behold from the decks and the sound fills the air all around. In the summer the creek can slow to a trickle, a perfect opportunity to hike the creek bed. There is a 60-foot rise and 200-foot distance from the bridge and parking lot to the entry of the house. There are several options to walk our “fit-bit” hill and we have an electric cart for guests’ use to travel the short distance with ease.
We fly under the flag of the trailblazing naturalist, John Muir, our hero. Father of our national parks and founder of the Sierra Club, we seek to foster what Mountain John famously said: " I care to live only to entice people to look at Nature's loveliness”. A groundbreaking experience never before realized in a vacation rental (or hotel) design awaits. We invite you to come hug our towering redwood giants, hike up Humbug Creek, exchange ghost stories with our cowboy poets around the campfire, and bathe your consciousness in the lore and lure of the days cowboys, Indians, buffalo and explorers roamed the vast splendors of this corner of the world. Experience life as it was in 19th century California all the while luxuriating in our expert concierge services, Rockstar chefs and customized, backroad tours of the Sonoma - Napa Wine Country.
We look forward to your review and comment of this heartfelt project which we have been working on for more than 7 years. Above all, we hope to serve as a harbinger of many environmental projects to come that provide an impetus for man to reunite with the earth, the continuity of life through the ages and to consider a sustainable path forward for ourselves and our planet. We propose this Calistoga retreat as a perfect stomping ground where the life-sustaining force of nature herself is paired with aesthetic refinement found in architecture, artifacts, sculpture, painting, prose, cuisine, wine and lore….to nurture the creative process in all those that come for a visit. A relaxed mind is a creative mind.
Come stay awhile, rock in one of our antique chairs to the rhythm of the creek surging below, feel the power of the trees growing all around - who have been here for centuries before you arrived and will continue to inhabit the earth long after you go. As you rock back, your head tilts toward the treetops. You catch a glimpse of an eagle circling above you cannot but be captivated by the essential prowess and uplifting spirit of mother nature. Lend her your ear, your attention and your much-needed commitment to prioritizing the sustainment of our collective better nature(s)….
